“Our daughter had a wonderful experience with Indian Explorers. Coming from a biracial family and having been in the Bay Area all her life, she had a limited knowledge of India. She was initially nervous about the camp and how she would be received and whether she would fit in. However, from the first day, she started coming home excited about what she was learning and the connections she was making with other kids. She started asking me questions about my life in India and started showing a lot of interest in our culture, geography and traditions. Gayatri (camp teacher) was so thoughtful in the topics she picked which would appeal to children who were fully immersed in Indian life as well as those who knew very little. My daughter was particularly struck by a session on immigration and asked a lot about my own reasons for immigration. Overall, I was happy with my child’s growth in confidence and emerging development of an Indian identity. We will return every year!"

“We had 2 children attend the Indian Explorers Camp and were pleasantly surprised with the teaching, experiences, art, infusion of technology and curriculum. The kids came home every day excited about what they had learned and about what they had created. The camp includes an open house on the final day for the kids to share their experience. Both kids made some good friends and are looking forward to going back next year! Thank you for creating such a wonderful space for the community."

“My son attended the Indian explorers camp during the summer and he really enjoyed it. He got to learn lot about Indian culture and Gayatri is an awesome teacher. She really puts in lot of effect with all the projects kids do and it's beautifully done. Makes it fun for kids too. Thank you for putting this camp together and we should have this every year."

“We attended the last day showcase where the kids exhibited their work and showed us around. It was really impressive, and very clear that they were not only proud of their creations and eager to show us what they’d learned, but that they’d had a blast doing it! In chatting more to Gayatri about how she designs the camp, I learned that she’s spent a lot of time researching pedagogy and talking to local teachers about the best ways to fire up kids and get them engaged. So much thought and effort had gone into how she structured the camp and the activities she designed, from salt dough reliefs of India’s landscape to games the kids actually created involving India’s history. The exhibition was marvelous and based on that alone, I’d encourage everyone to check out the camp."

How can I have a summer camp in my local neighborhood?

Our programs currently serve families in Berkeley, Oakland, and nearby areas. To expand to a new neighborhood, we need a cohort of at least 5 children. If you can gather interested families, we'll handle the rest!

We also offer classroom programs to promote Asian awareness and celebrate traditions through art and cultural heritage projects. Share your classroom goals with us!

How do I learn more about your camp content?

Our practice is rooted in educational theories of critical pedagogy, global education, and digital learning. Please email us for last year's curriculum. Sample activities:

Grades 1-5: Salt dough maps of South Asia, Ganges watershed, Bio-geography of India, National Parks of Asia
Grades 4-5 : Silk Road Animations, Climate Privilege Walk, Immigration dialogues.

“My favorite activity that I did here at camp was making the map. It was fun painting it and making it come to life. It may not be the best but I am still proud of doing this."
“The thing that surprised me most was how similar the art was from the different Asian cultures. I especially wasn’t expecting the designs to be so easy to make with materials that could be found in anyone’s house."
“I really enjoyed the Silk Road animation where we found pictures of items traded on a computer, mapped out where they came from and where they were sold, and then animated them so they moved along a trail to their destination"
“The thing that I learned that surprised me the most was that so many different things came to different countries by the Silk Road”
“I liked making the salt dough map because it was really fun to make it 3d and there is a place in Asia called the roof of the world where all the mountains connect!"
“We learned four different art forms and all from different places. Islam, Buddhist Mandalas, South Indian Kolums and Rangolis. This was a very fun art project and it made me feel happy and it made me feel the Indian part of myself. I loved this art a lot and I really enjoyed this expereience even though I worked alone, but that really wasn't that stressful because this is the kind of thing I like to do more myself instead of with another person with me"
“I am curious why humans fight so much over places...
Walls between countries can be bad because if there is something dangerous in one country, its harder to evacuate to another country that is nearby...
With immigration, you can meet new people and you can learnt a lot about that culture"
“My favorite activity in the camp was making the salt dough maps. I liked painting them and making rivers. I also liked making the mandalas. It was fun to work with my partner."
“I liked this art project because it was fun and I got to work with someone else. At first it was hard but it got better once we got the hang of it."
